Unit 1: Art is a Choice!
Standard 3: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
Grade Level Expectation:
LESSON TWO: Students will add paper pulp to the armature to create the mask for an emotional mask and then add decorations to add to the emotion of the emotional mask.
LESSON THREE: Students will paint the emotional mask with a symbol.

- 3.1: Identify subject matter, symbols, and ideas in works of art.
- 3.4: Select and use subject matter, symbols, and ideas to communicate meaning in works of art

Unit 2: Art as Language!
Standard 3: Choosing and evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
Grade Level Expectation:
LESSON TWO: Students will add symbols to your portrait that represent themselves. Then, they will add color using crayons to your portrait only.
LESSON THREE: Students will add texture to the background of our portrait with the media provided.

Grade Level Expectation:
- 3.6: Analyze how the use of subject matter, symbols, and ideas are used in works of art.
- 3.2: Integrate a variety of sources for subject matter, symbols and/or ideas which best communicate an intended meaning in works of art.
LESSON TWO: Students will add symbols to your portrait that represent themselves. Then, they will add color using crayons to your portrait only.
LESSON THREE: Students will add texture to the background of our portrait with the media provided.
Unit 3: Art as Information!
Standard 5: Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.
Grade Level Expectation:
LESSON TWO: Students will finish creating their color wheel adding the teritary colors.
LESSON THREE: Students will finish up their artwork by adding artistic facts in the form of sentence snowflakes.

- 5.5: Evaluate the artist's intent and effectiveness in communication ideas and emotions in works of art.
- 5.6: Apply visual arts vocabulary when reflecting upon and assessing works of art.

LESSON THREE: Students will finish up their artwork by adding artistic facts in the form of sentence snowflakes.
Unit 4: Art as Communication!
Standard 5: Reflecting upon and assessing the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.
Grade Level Expectation:
LESSON TWO: Students will create a silhouette of themselves with teacher help and add a design in the background with their name.
LESSON THREE: Students will finish up their silhouette backgrounds and paint in their silhouette one chosen color.

Grade Level Expectation:
- 5.2: Identify ways the visual arts are used as communication.
- 5.4: Analyze works of art to speculate why they were created.
LESSON TWO: Students will create a silhouette of themselves with teacher help and add a design in the background with their name.
LESSON THREE: Students will finish up their silhouette backgrounds and paint in their silhouette one chosen color.
